The third in a trio to be built by Alexander Stephen & Sons Ltd., Glasgow, United States entered service in June 1903 with an overall length of 515 ft. and a gross tonnage of 10,122. She was the most popular of the trio, crossing the Atlantic 462 times during 31 years of operation for the Skandinavien-Amerika Linie from Copenhagen to the US. United States was designed to accomodate 131 first-class, 72 second-class and 1,100 third class passengers, her twin-screw propulsion reaching a maximum speed of 15 knots.
